Why LIC and Windows Still Dominate After Decades
๐ค Why LIC and Windows Still Dominate After Decades
They Said It Would Die… But It’s Still Number One!
There’s something strange I’ve noticed over the years — people love declaring things dead.
Certain technologies, brands, habits, even entire companies — they get written off long before their time. And yet, time has a funny way of humbling all predictions.
Let me take you through two personal stories — one about technology, the other about finance — and together, let’s uncover a timeless truth.
๐ป The First One: “Windows is Dying…”
Let’s rewind about 25 years.
It was an exciting time — I had just got my first personal computer. A bulky CRT monitor, the sound of a dial-up modem, and the joy of exploring a new digital world. Like most people, my PC came with Microsoft Windows.
But I still remember those conversations from the "tech experts" around me:
“Windows is bloated.”
“Linux is the future.”
“Open source will replace everything proprietary.”
And they had a point. Linux was free, secure, endlessly customizable — a developer’s dream. The media, forums, and even college computer labs were buzzing with predictions that Windows would slowly fade away.
But then… it didn’t.
Fast forward to 2025:
Windows is still the most widely used operating system on personal computers.
Even in an era of cloud apps, mobile-first design, and AI-powered platforms, Windows quietly remains the go-to choice for the average PC user.
Why?
Because it just works.
It’s reliable. Familiar. Universally accepted.
From your accountant to your schoolteacher, your local cyber cafรฉ to your bank’s back office — Windows is still everywhere.
๐ก The Second One: “LIC is Obsolete…”
Now fast-forward 10 more years.
I had just stepped into a new chapter in my career — I became a licensed life insurance advisor with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). For me, this was more than just a job. It was a mission to help people secure their futures.
But once again, I heard the same kind of chatter:
“LIC is outdated.”
“Private insurers are the future.”
“It’s too traditional, too slow, not digital enough.”
There was some truth in that. Private companies were launching with fresh branding, aggressive marketing, online portals, and mobile apps. The younger generation seemed more drawn to these sleek options. The market was evolving, and LIC appeared — at least on the surface — to be lagging.
But here we are in 2025…
And guess what?
LIC is still India’s largest and most trusted life insurer.
✅ And now, it holds a Guinness World Record too!
On 20th January 2025, LIC made history by selling 452,839 life insurance policies in a single day, earning a place in the Guinness World Records.
The record was officially announced on May 24, 2025, showcasing LIC’s unmatched outreach, trust, and operational efficiency — something no other life insurer in India has ever achieved.
Yes, its market share has been challenged.
Yes, private players have made big encroachment.
But in real terms — number of policyholders, claim settlement reliability, agent network, and scale — LIC remains the leader.
๐ง A Deeper Lesson: Why These Giants Endure
So what’s the common thread between Windows and LIC?
In both cases, the world was quick to assume that newer meant better — that old brands would be swept away by innovation.
But people often forget something critical:
Trends are loud. But trust is quiet. And trust takes time.
Both Windows and LIC are not just brands — they’re rituals. They’re comfort zones. They’re a part of people’s daily lives.
Why Windows still dominates:
- Pre-installed on most devices
- Universal compatibility — schools, offices, banks
- Familiar interface — no re-learning required
- Reliable support — online and offline
Why LIC still leads:
- Government-backed trust
- Rural outreach — even in the remotest regions
- Large agent network — real guidance for real people
- Emotionally rooted policies for Indian values
These aren’t just features. They’re emotions.
❤️ My Personal Reflection
Over the years, I’ve met thousands of families. Each one has their own story, their own dreams, their own fears.
I’ve sat with people who lost loved ones and found strength through an LIC claim.
I’ve helped parents plan for a daughter’s wedding using the returns from a policy they bought two decades ago.
I’ve watched first-time earners take pride in starting their first policy, with that iconic blue-and-gold LIC logo on the paperwork.
And the same goes for technology.
Students learned PowerPoint on Windows. Small shopkeepers created invoices on Excel. Parents explored the internet for the first time through a familiar Windows screen.
People don’t just buy products — they invest in familiarity.
They choose trust. They choose what feels right.
๐ Innovation vs. Loyalty
Make no mistake — innovation is necessary. Yes, LIC must evolve with the digital age. Windows must adapt to new computing trends. And they are evolving — LIC now offers mobile onboarding, WhatsApp servicing, and more. Windows has Copilot AI, cloud sync, and security enhancements.
But evolution doesn’t mean elimination. Just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s obsolete. It might just mean it’s proven.
๐ What Can We Learn?
“New” doesn’t always mean “better.”
“Old” doesn’t always mean “outdated.”
And the true test of anything — be it a tool, a company, or a relationship — is time.
๐ข Let’s Talk!
If you're someone who still believes in value over hype, you're not alone.
Let’s build a financial plan that combines the wisdom of experience with the speed of the modern world.
Because trends will come and go. But trust? That stays forever.

๐ฎ Coming Up Next…
In my next post, I’ll explore a simple but powerful question:
“Why do people still prefer human advisors over robo-apps in the age of AI?”
Especially when it comes to something as emotional and personal as life insurance — the answer might surprise you.
Stay tuned. The conversation continues.
